Invitations

Wedding Invitations come in many different shapes and sizes from scrolls to squares and boxes. Browse the wide range of invitation samples available on the internet both handmade and printed to gather ideas for your wedding style.

Most stationery companies will offer you a sample either free of charge or for a small fee. If you can not find anything you like, some places will offer a bespoke design service where they will discuss your wedding themes and colour scheme with you and then design a wedding invitation or set of stationery especially for you.

If you like a set of wedding stationery but it is in the wrong colour scheme or you would like something changing, email the company and ask! Most will be happy to make their wedding stationery in different colours or adapt an aspect for you.

Invitation Tips

  • The bride's name should appear before the groom's name.

  • Send out invitations at least six to eight weeks before the ceremony to give your guests plenty of time to make travel arrangements, if travelling from interstate or overseas.

  • Include all the guests' names on the envelope. Avoid impersonal terms such as 'and family.' Use full names, not nick names. And make it clear who is invited.

  • If you want to depart from the traditional wording, consult your stationer for ideas - or look at wedding invitations you've received, and and decide which ones you like best.

  • Black is predominantly the ink color of choice, however don't be afraid to try different color if you're having a beach wedding. Just be sure that the color and font are easy to read.

  • Maps and/or directions from the ceremony venue to the reception venue are now often included with invitations as a courtesy to out of town guests.

How To Write An Invitation

  1. Decide who is announcing the wedding - The couple's parents or the bride and groom themselves.

  2. Decide whether your invitation will be formal or informal.

  3. If the ceremony will be held in a place of worship, use the term 'the honor of your presence'. Otherwise use 'the pleasure of your company' or something similar.

  4. For a traditional invitation, list the bride's name - usually first and middle - after her parents' names. For example, 'Mr. and Mrs. John Spillar request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter, Mary Ann.'

  5. Follow the bride's name with the full name of the groom: 'to Brad Jacob Williams.' You may choose to name the groom's parents: 'son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Williams.'

  6. Write out the date: 'Friday, the ninth of June, 2005.'

  7. Mention the time of the ceremony: 'at ten o'clock.'

  8. List the location and full address.
