If you find it too expensive to buy a suit or have one made, hiring is a great alternative. Formal hire companies stock the latest fashions and accessories, and can offer invaluable advice and personalised service. Formal wear is often booked out well in advance, so be sure to choose early. At least 3 to 4 months before your wedding.

The groom's outfit should suit the formality of the wedding. Browse our guide on suits below:-

• A formal daytime wedding: A classic grey morning suit with cutaway jacket and pin stripe trousers will never go amiss. Team this with a waistcoat, white wing-collared shirt, a cravat and cufflinks. Alternatively, you might decide on a longer style jacket worn with striped or plain trousers.

• A formal evening wedding: Full evening dress is called for. Black tails and trousers worn with a cummerbund or waistcoat, a white wing-collared shirt, white bow tie and cufflinks. If tails don't appeal, look for a waist length, bolero style evening jacket.

• A semi-formal daytime wedding: A navy, black or dark grey lounge suite, teamed with a white shirt and tie would be perfect. Ties in woven silk look fabulous. Consider a white tie (tone on tone always looks elegant), or match the colour to one of your bridal theme colours. Complete the look with a breast pocket handkerchief to match.

• A semi-formal evening wedding: Opt for a black dinner jacket and trousers, a white dress shirt, a bow tie or cravat, cummerbund or waistcoat, and cufflinks.

• An informal daytime or evening wedding: As long as the groom's attire suits the wedding theme, your options are practically limitless. From dark jacket and trousers, white shirt and cummerbund, to Nehru jackets, embroidered shirts, silk and satin vests, and fat boy ties.
